I have a member on one of my forums who generally means well, but she tends to overreact and read hostile intentions in ordinary conversation. She builds it into a big deal with other posters.
Do you have any suggestions on how to how handle this sort of thing?

Well if the person is generally nice, then the key is to be nice about it, and ask them NICELY to stop, then if they do not, give them a warning and so on. I know it's hard for some people to be mean about things, but when someone is causing problems like that, it scares away current members as well as potential members, and it's better to just say "Hey I need you to calm down and not fight with everybody", then to just let it go on.

I will also echo that it's important that you address the problem in private, however it's also important to stick to your guns. If this member is disruptive, and continues to be disruptive, it will start to affect the members. Don't take "no" for an answer.

Thanks, gang. Your suggestions confirm my initial thinking, and I'm very relieved to hear them.
Next time she starts getting worked up, I'll take it to a private message and quietly see what I can do to make her see that her behavior is detrimental to the board. If that doesn't do the trick, I'll resort to the warnings.
Thank you, psychogirl7, Jokkun and Trublu!
